Review of The Dex Legacy Collected Scripts & Commentary by Tim Hardie for Page Chewing

“This book is an unusual one. Normally with book reviews, the book is the thing I’m reviewing but I’m finding that hard to do in isolation here, because this literary creation exists as part of a much wider interconnected web of short stories, ever-expanding audio-drama episodes and forthcoming novels. In my opinion, to fully appreciate Emily Inkpen’s book you really do need to experience the audio version of the show…”

Dex Legacy Prequel Story to be Included in the Learning to be Human Anthology by Flame Tree Press

With stories from open submissions and classic tales we examine the interplay between automation, humankind, and what it is to be human. The stories encourage us to think of human and machine development in the same terms. What is it like to emerge from childhood as an adult? What was it like to be at the mercy of elemental forces in ancient times? Are we truly in control of our climate now? Are machines the future, or a dangerous distraction? Are thinking machines inevitable? There's so much to explore in this fascinating new book…

FanFiAddict - Feature - The Dex Legacy

The first thing that struck me as I listened to these episodes was just how deep this world goes. There’s an immersive richness to the backdrop, environment, and politics of planet SP714 which pulled me in right from episode one. The stage on which this story takes place possesses layers upon layers upon layers, all just waiting to be discovered. It feels lived in. It feels real. It’s amazing.

Frasier Armitage Reviews The First Episode of The Dex Legacy: “The Bomb”

Each character deals with issues of accountability in one form or another, whether it’s the wisdom of building an army for hire, the killing of insurgents, the loss of soldiers, or the invention of a country-ending bomb. The episode succeeds in raising questions without dishing out easy answers.

Overall, this episode made for an expertly paced, edifying listen, abounding in depth. There’s a lot to relish. Put simply: It’s the bomb.

Bob the Alien interviews… Emily Inkpen - by Paul Arvidson

Bob: I’m pleased to discover that your series the Dex Legacy is about ‘the other’ and what it means to be human, or not. Want to tell us a little about that and why it’s that you’re writing about?

E.I.: Well, as I’m sure you’re aware from your extensive brain probing, humans are fascinating. My book is about aliens, but alien humans. SP714 is a colony planet, so my aliens feel a connection to Earth, and throughout there’s this feeling of “looking back” for meaning while moving forward on their own. The stars of The Dex Legacy are at the forefront of this “forward thinking”, which would be noble were it not for their horrific methods.

Author Focus - Tim Hardy reviews The Dex Legacy

Emily Inkpen is a skilful writer with a vivid imagination. She paints stories using a vast canvas but they’re driven by her characters and their interactions. Whilst likeable, Varian, Ren and Isra are also complex, damaged, ruthless and violent. They’re a product of the world they’ve been born into and, crucially, they also represent Dex Industries’ cutting-edge military technology. Whilst these stories feature action and adventure, they don’t shy away from the consequences of war and violence. This is dark edged sci-fi and it leaves you with something to think about afterwards.

The Dex Legacy Audio Drama Launch

The full cast audio drama production, set 11 years before the start of book 1, The Blood Road, follows the stars of the novel as they navigate their teen years. Following key events in the world and in their lives, the series examines the reality of growing up as the most valuable assets ever constructed by the munitions empire, Dex Industries.

Limitless Possibilities: The SFF Stories of Emily Inkpen

In her most recently penned tales from planet SP714, the setting for The Dex Legacy series, the forthcoming sci-fi audio podcast, she explores the limitless possibilities of fantasy and sci-fi story crafting.

Emily is a copywriter, a storyteller and an avid gamer. She has far more talent that I can possibly capture below and please make sure you visit her website...

1- What inspired you to start writing?

I always lived in imaginary worlds as a child. I could play for hours and hours on my own in these intricate universes I’d created and I held it all in my head… like, years of story…

Press Release - Author Emily Inkpen Joins John Jarrold Literary Agency

John Jarrold said: “Occasionally you see a world or universe that feels fully formed from the first page.  That is the case here – as it is with Emily’s characters. This series-opening novel is an outstanding debut that had me cheering for its protagonists, sometimes despite themselves. I want to know What Happens Next!”
