Before Toyumi pivoted this app into AI-generated interactions, it was a narrative-based game with individually crafted stories written by a team of freelance writers.
The platform
The platform provided a rigid branching framework, within which the story played out through meaningful choices leading to eight potential conclusions.
Along with the other writers, I pitched short scenario-based interactions to the lead editor. The interactions typically centred on a social dilemma.
The player would face each dilemma, navigating through meaningful choices along the way.
Each ending was scored according to how successfully the player reacted to the social challenge.
In the “writers room”, we coordinated our output to ensure players were presented with scenarios that covered a range of emotions and levels of intensity.
Once we’d written the content for each “node”, we selected a “mood”. That mood would be reflected in the character image that would populate the screen behind every interaction.
I wrote 10 of these shorts, on topics ranging from not telling the host of a dinner party about a food allergy, to a trilogy set at a pop star academy, where the player dealt with the stresses of a competitive environment.
